I have a 5.5 seahorse that runs in reverse and neutral fine, once you shift into forward it clunks and dies, i have to move the fly wheel back and forth a few times to get it loose again, and it starts up fine.

ideas?

Sounds like a problem in the gearbox.

brought her out to the lake, I can troll forward 1/4 throttle w/o it having problems and she purrs as usual, it's only when i try to go to 1/2 or full throttle that the lower unit rattles and eventually dies.

Sounds like the spring clutch in the gearcase is broken. The lower section of the 2-piece driveshaft has a spring shock absorber in it that is supposed to slip when you hit something - there's no rubber clutch in your prop. If that clutch breaks, it will extend the length of that section of driveshaft, enough that it binds up. Don't run it anymore, as it will eventually trash the housing and upper bearing...

Got it back from the shop, with a new lower unit and $100.00 later, there was a gear that was popping in and out that would jam up. Brought it out on the lake this weekend and the motor shifts just fine no worries. Except now when I go to full throttle, the motor whines high and low and will not stay run consistent. 0 - 1/2 throttle is fine. I tried adjusting the mixture (lean and rich) but no luck. The fuel I have in there is only a week old, so I would assume that if there was water in the gas that it would affect how it runs at low throttle as well. The only other idea i have is new plugs. I did clean them and there is no difference.

Thanks,
