Re: 5.5 seahorse

Thanks again Bear,
I put Castrol hypoy c gear oil sae 80w/90 it says on the case where I added it "use hypoid oil"
Is the oil I used okay? and as far as pre-mixing my fuel is regular 2 stroke oil okay? I also had a problem when I ran the engine it would run as long as the choke was on but when I turned the choke off it would die any suggestions?

Re: 5.5 seahorse

Hi Kenra
The gear oil choice will be fine. Two stroke TCW-3 mixed @ 25:1 will do for the motor. As far as the choke thing goes there are a lot of things that could cause this. I suggest a compression test first. Then look into the fuel system. These model use a presure full system. They have no fuel pump. So any leaks in the tank, hoses or connector would be a problem. You probably also need to disassemble the carb and clean it.

Hi Kenra...

Don't know much about the Castrol hypoy. I use OMC hi-vis or ultra hi-vis in gear cases and have not had a complaints. I'm sure any gear case oil for outboards will be OK. Use a two stroke oil specially made for outboards. Lots of good brands on the market. Merc, Bombardier, Yamaha, Lubri-plate, any of these will work. Look for the TC-W3 rating on the container. Sounds like the old Johnny may be in need of a carb rebuild. When it runs with the choke closed and dies when the choke opens, this generally indicates pluggage in the lift tube from dirt or usually varnish or gum. If you have nerver had one apart, I would strongly suggest a service manual to guide you. Carb kits are still available for these older engines as well as ignition parts and water pump impellers.

Jim
