My 5.7 EFI starboard engine will not start cold. It turns over and pops/backfires when the ignition is released. If I start the port engine and let it run for half an hour, the engine bay warms up and the starboard engine will fire up. The engine will not fire up cold. Once up and running, it runs fine with no starting issues. The other day I went through the same process to get it started, it ran fine, and headed to our fishing hole (25 miles). Once there shut down both motors for approx. 2 hours. When leaving both motors fired up (no issues) and left to warm up for about 5 minutes. I powered up and was on plane and cruising for about 1 min. (3400 rpm) when the starboard engine RPM dropped off and it stalled. I heard it pop/backfire as the rpm dropped. Tried to start but it would not fire. Once back to the marina I changed the fuel filter and the distributer/rotor with no success. I was pressed for time so I left it with the marina mechanic. He told me that the fuel pump had failed as the fuel flow to the throttle body was erratic. He did not pressure test it. After replacing it $$$, the starboard motor will still not start. He is telling me that it needed to be replaced anyway??? Now he wants to do a compression test. Seems like an electrical issue to me. HELP.

The first thing I recommend is to have the motors ecu checked for stored trouble codes and go from there.

Sounds like your mechanic is the one most of us find, if they do something which didn't work but will not admit it was wrong. With him replacing the fuel pump there is more then likely a problem in that area, but I also believe it is electrical. Start by pulling the connectors apart and seeing if they need to be cleaned. There should be two identical relays on top the engine, swap them with each other. Ones for the ECM and the other is for the fuel pump. Heat causes things to expand and is probably helping with a loose or bad connection. Make sure to check battery connections including grounds.
