Hi all. Hoping you can help a self confessed holly carb amateur here !!

long story short and after many many things tried so far...

Having a couple of issues remaining still after getting lots of issues sorted out already. I won’t go through everything but here goes

350 GM repower engine. One of two installed in 2012 but only had 12 hours on each when a friend bought the boat last year. It’s sat for ages unused due to previous owner taken Ill.
I can only presume it was running well after the new engines, but a few things put me off this.

So timing was off on both engines. Now set at 4o BTC. Despite me originally thinking it should be 8. Apparently these repower should be 4 ??
fuel tank empty and dried. All fresh fuel things got so much better.
fuel air set to spec and carbs cleaned but not since timing set properly though.

starboard engine now running perfectly and as it should.
port engine over fuelling. We have the back chamber a knock and the back two chokes now not flooding it with fuel as soon as we did.
Boat now planing with lots of power but starboard engine still lacking power near the top end (thinking carb again and HS Jet)
this engine also popping a little. Adjusted fuel air again a little. Popping stopped but still lacking power a little. Much lazier than starboard. As if second chokes maybe not opening.
noticed the engine running cold. New t stats on their way now. Was running as 122 degrees. Should be 165 or about that. Won’t be helping at all.
But just not being familiar with these holly carbs...anything else to look for ? It has a power valve ! Never seen that before.
open to all suggestions. Plugs all new and diz cap and leads new. New coils too.
Am I missing anything ?

Thanks.

Sorry but this old guy is having trouble following.
Timing should be 8 BTDC and 4* is not correct

If motor is popping then its lean or out of time

Mmm. Ok so that’s what we set it at initially. Then the owner assured me it should be 4o after looking into it. I’ve never heard of these being 4. Either 8 or 10 is only what I’ve seen. But presumed that perhaps it was different, being a new crate engine and having 300hp spec an all. You defo think that it should be 8 AD ? The port engine was at 4 already and perhaps made me think the Owners idea was correct. There is no issue with the port engine. All the power and response in the world and runs so well.

Oh. And I’ll admit the original engines were AQ271s. Still has the VP290 drives.

Oh now I’m bloody confused. The VP271 are apparently 6o tdc at idle. I’ll need to find some specs for these repower engines somewhere. There is still a real whiff of fuel from the exhaust of that engine. Even at 4o before tdc. Need to take carb off again and defo see what happens once it’s not running cold too.

Never been a fan of Holley. Cantankerous and difficult to keep happy. Bit like me...

Sounds like one is still not right. Pull it off and go right though it again...

4 degrees, 8 degrees. At the top end, that's not going to equate to much. But unless the rebuild has changed the compression ratio, then the timing should be the same as before the rebuild.

Thanks Chris.
totally new units from bottom to top. We will pull this carb off again. It’s defo had water through it previously. Will need a good going over I’d say. Instead of a quick clean on the boat.
Thanks

Its a VP and its in the Merc section

Kind of...it’s a black engine. Only thing VP about it now is the drives. It’s a mercruiser looking Repower branded Vortec 350. Couldn’t see a repower engine section 😂
