5.7 L Ignition Question

I am presently installing a new 1998 5.7 L GM crate engine in my boat. The past engine was 1997 5.7 with 2 barrel-non vortec heads and thunderbolt IV ignition. The new engine has vortec heads-4 barrel carb and stock heavy duty truck cam. I am wondering if the ICM from last engine will work with the replacement engine and also if I need the knock and crank sensors with this conversion(I am not sure if the sensors are required because of the fuel injection version of this engine). I am a newbie and this whole conversion is an experience in learning. I appreciate any info on the above and am sure there will be lots of questions in the future as I proceed with the installation.

Thanks Rick

Re: 5.7 L Ignition Question

My Choice would be to drop in the T-Bolt IV from the old motor,.....
That'll be Plug,+ Play,.... No New Sensors Needed............ ;)

kingrich,..??.....??

Don't I Know You ???

Welcome to the Forums here at iboats.com.......

Glad to see You made it over.......... ;)

Re: 5.7 L Ignition Question

Bondo good to hear from you. I will use the original distributor first off and see what that does. Wasn't sure if I would need the knock sensor and module. Got tired of the bull... on the other site. Will keep you posted as to how retrofit goes. I took your advice on using stock cam that came with engine and will try it for now-can always change out later.

Kingrich

Re: 5.7 L Ignition Question

I'm Sure it'll all work out for you.......

Using the T-Bolt IV,.. If you want to start "Hot-Rodding" your motor,..
Just changing the Ignition Control Boxes can give you different rates of Advance,+ Different rates of Over-All Timing.........

The Big Difference between the T-Bolt IV,+ the T-Bolt V, is the IV has a Timing Curve Mapped Out,+ the V is a Pro-Active system, constantly adjusting the timing....
That's Why the T-Bolt V Needs the Knock-Sensor.......

Did you ever find a copy of Dennis Moore's book, "Small-Block Chevy Marine Performance" ??
Lots,+ Lots of Great Info in that book........

Glad to see you made the trip over HERE,.. From over There.........
I Wish I could convince Charlie, from over There, to wander over Here............ ;)

Re: 5.7 L Ignition Question

Bondo thanks for the info. Been too busy of late to look for dennis's book but am going to do a search for it today. Planning on dropping engine in this week, maybe on the water next week.

Kingrich
