I have a 1988 Seaswirl Sable with a brand new 5.7 litre engine, rebuilt Rochester 4 Barrel carb, and a new Carter fuel pump. I start the engine and black smoke comes out of the exhaust. Gas is all over the carburetor around the accelerator pump. I know the engine is flooded with gas. I have taken the carb off and the inside of the intake manifold has unburnt fuel in it. The engine, after about five minutes of running at 1000 to 1500 rpms will clean up and start running and idling fine. This only happens after it has been sitting over night. I have checked valves, timing, plugs etc. I have replaced the carb (again) and now I am in the process of putting the old fuel pump on on start the process of elimination. If you have some suggestions, bring them on.

what Carter fuel pump? If it puts out more than about 8 psi, fuel will push past the needle/seat and flood out the float bowl.
Is the choke opening properly as the motor warms up?

I suspect some trash got into the needle and seat holding it open - or something not assembled right in the carb.

Can the float be adjusted? It may not be closing the needle all the way.
