5.7 Merc/ Alpa 1 Gen 2 upgrades

I have a 1996 5.7 Merc Thunderbolt/Alpa 1 Gen 2 drive. The boat is all stock including the 2 barrel carb. I would like to make a few upgrades to the engine and carb. Besides the 4 barrel what else would get me the most bang for the buck(i.e. cam, ext.)?
