5.7 Merc motor dies under 1,500 RPM

1996 Merc 5.7 starts fine but dies under 1,500 RPM. Starts back easily. Runs fantastic over 1,500 to WOT. Pull it back and it dies at 1,500. Does not sputter, back fire, bog etc., just simply dies. Any suggestions appreciated!!

Could be the idle circuit in the carb is plugged up.
