Good day all
So I managed to finally go pick up my new to me beast and start going through it. I have a few questions on some items. It is a 1988 5.7 mercruiser mag, alpha 1 drive.
The port engine has an intermitent starter I hear the click of either the slave sol or the starter sol and sometimes it will turn and others not. I am going to go out and troubleshoot it down but I was wondering about the starter soleniod. I know the starter is marine but is the solenoid on it special for marine use or is it an automotive solenoid?
After crawling round under the engine I noticed 1 exhaust manifold is very rusty on the bottom. While runnng on muffs I saw no water leaks. The other manifolds look very good externally so is this something I should be concerned about?
I am pulling the drives to check bellows and bearings but I noticed playing around that reverse seems not to engage well on one drive. The drives were gone through before I purchased along with a housing that had the pivots repaired. Is it common that the shift adjustment would be out after pulling apart as I have the manual 6 or am I looking at bad bottom shift cable?
The engines had full tune ups done as well before purchase but the port is surging at idle. The starboard was limping so after pulling out the plugs and doing a comp test (test was good) I noticed 2 plugs were not running so I guessed they screwed up the firing order and was right on those 2 plugs. So I would like to go ahead and check point dwell and timing but so far I have not been able to DL manual 9 as it gives up at about 90%, does anyone have the dwell and timing number for that motor?
Thanks
Mat
