G'Day One and all.. Well I finally got my near new 5.7 mpi that has a cracked block, was told that it had only 1 crack.. When I checked it out I found 4 cracks:(. "O" well 1 or 4. I brought from EBay 2 packs of JB weld.. I V-ed the cracks and ground off the paint and applied the JB.. I am now waitting for it to dry to paint over it..
Don, this is the engine that I asked you about if it was a 5.7 or a 6.2 some months ago. I am looking to download a service manual for this engine also..
I would hate to live over there because of all the problems that you guys have with the winter, here there is no need to drain the water or anything and can go beating any day of the year.
Best wishes to all for the comming christmass and new year.
Cheers from Australia.

Well what you gonna do with that 4 cracked block 5.7. Use it for a anchor ?

You waited for it.

No need to wait over here for one, just go into any junk yard, for money they have all you want.

Cracked block JB weld.

Not trying to be mean or anything,,, but how do you think those cracks got in the block?

#1 reason, freeze damage from not draining block / manifolds.

Don't worry, I live in a warm climate and never heard or thought about draining my I/O's block before jointing Iboats, never had a problem either. Then heard of people in my town getting cracked manifolds and blocks during cold weather. Even though I use my boat through out the winter, I'm draining during cold weather from now on.

Good luck on the repairs

Ayuh,...

Even without knowing Where those 4 Cracks are,...
I guessing you'll be finding More when you light it....

You Really should be Replacing the Block...

Fishrdan,

I don't winterize . . . there are places you don't have to even if you don't use it ;)

QC,

I know what you are saying. I didn't drain the block and manifolds in the past either, no problems for 10 years, pretty warm climate here, Vegas. I'm not going to winterize my boat since I use it every few weeks, but after shutting it down in the winter I'm going to open the engine seawater drains. Better safe than sorry.

I'm not saying everyone has to drain the block and manifold, but if the OP has 4 cracks in the block,,, he probably needs to in the future.

See I think he bought it from US and lives Downunder. If that is Sydney north, he's warmer than you and me. Vegas is funny as you know, I don't in Havasu or home though. Probably would in Vegas . . . I once had snow blowing under the doors at the Old Landmark . . .

I guess that I should have mentioned I brought this engine out of The Great Lakes (Raine I think). Yes, it was freeze cracked but with only a test run on the clock. I decided to try the JB weld and if it worked great and if it didn't a new block would have to be used. The price that I paid was a bargin, I could dismantle it and sell off the bits. I have a friend over here that imports Chevy Corvets and SUV's via Carson LA and the shipping cost is free.
By the way I live in Queensland on the coast and the temp is about 32c.
Cheers

Re: 5.7 mpi Mercruiser w/- cracked block

I spent a great summer (your winter) up in Mackay about 30 years ago. Got a chance to see a bit of your country - it is beautiful! Spent a week on Magnetic Island. That was one of the best times of my life! :)

Back to your issue - I don't have any experience personally with dealing with cracked blocks as I live in South Florida, BUT, from what I have seen, if the cracks are only external, then the JB Weld may work. If they are internal, you will be looking for a new block.

I live in Hervey Bay (promounced Harvey Bay) which is about 220 miles north of Brisbane.
If the weld works and the crack is only on the outside of the block, Great.
If they are on the inside, stiff, have to buy a new block.
Anyone got any idea where I can get a std one cheap??
Cheers
