i have a 5.7 chevy that does not have a baffle or windage tray in it
how important are those in a boat

how is the stock mercruiser one mounted? do they use studs on the main bolts or are the main caps drilled for studs?

thanks for the help

Yeah you better put one in or you will get trouble. Boats run at wacky angles to the horizon and the motors spin at high rpms for longer periods than most cars would.
Mine is an 88 and I recall it has studs over the ends of the main bolts with nylock nuts.
It doesn't need to be something marine specific, it just needs to block things between the crank and the pan.

You really do need one, keeps oil from coming into direct contact with the rotating assembly. The thread size of the main cap studs is 3/8-16. How many studs do you have on your engine? GM Performance products #12554816 and 3 nuts will fix it under $10.00. When I rebuilt my engine it was missing aswell. That is the part I used. I recommend using red loctite on on the nuts and threads of the oil pump bolt.
