5.7 OsXi-DF noises and loss of power

In the water at idle, under load, there are no problems...but as I increased RPM to get on the channel, the port engine began to surge and back down RPMs rhythmically. RPM set at 1400 would back down to 800, then up, and down again...

When I tired to push to get on plane, the engine sputtered, backfired several times, lost RPM, and I shut it off immediately.

Back to the slip on starboard engine only....

I restarted the port engine with the hatch open, to listen to the most horrible whizzes, loud sputtering hashes, gasseous hissing and up-and-down surges and several backfires, for the first 30-40 seconds, and just before I shut down, it begins to settle down, quietly and smoothly, leaving behind a single, loud whirring and vibration from the high pressure fuel pump, all at idle!.

After about five minutes, even this noise disappeared, to the point that I got out of the slip, back on the channel, and tried to get on plane, but the power was not there and the backfires, hissing and fuel pump whining returned. RPMs go down and stay down.

The fuel filters are new. This particular fuel pump gave me a similar symptom once, in which the electrical connector had disconnected from the vibration, causing loss of power when throttling up, and setting the engine down to safe mode. Once the connector was secured with a tie-band, the pump has functioned perfectly for the past 6 years.

Where do I start? I have a mechanic coming to check the fuel system this week, but any pointers are appreciated.

-thanks

Well...there is a reason the symptoms are similar...THE PROBLEM IS THE SAME!

yup...I have been bitten by the same snake twice....

here is the fuel pump and fuel cell...at the top I saw the neatly secured connector for the high pressure fuel pump

but under the hose, there is another electrical connector, and the tie bands are loose because one of them broke off

I ran the engines after securing the connectors, and all is well again....
