I can't get my boat into the shop for 3 weeks so I need help figuring this out. I have a 2000 Trophy 2359 with very limited access to the engine. Here's what happened. Cruising back to the marina out of nowhere the rpms smoothly drops in half, then I smelled smoke checked the gauges and the oil pressure dropped from the normal 80 psi to around 20. Temp stayed normal. Stop the boat and open the engine cover and their was oil all over the engine bay. Checked the oil and it was not milky so limped back to marina. I cleaned up the engine and it started right up no leak at idle. I tried to do a compression test but can't even get to the plugs.
I took the boat back out and the leak came back at higher rpm, oil pressure still low and smoking bad out of the exhaust, temp OK, no water in oil. Any ideas on what might have let loose? Thanks!

OK so I checked all the logical places, valve covers, breather hose, pcv valve, seems to be coming from the front starboard side, gets caught up in the alternater and thrown all over. Smoke in the exhaust and leaking outside of engine leads me to a head gasket. Can a head gasket leak oil into a cylinder and outside the engine without getting into the water passages? No water in oil.

Oh yes oil leaks just out without water being involved. Sounds to me like a front main seal. Can you reach down and put your fingers under and behind the crank pulley to see if there's oil there? The pulleys and belts picking the oil up is really the only way I can think of for the oil to be distributed all over in the compartment. As far as smoking out of the exhaust, that's another issue in of itself. Did the oil level drop below the stick due to the leak?

Id be worried about the low oil pressure a bad seal wouldn't cause a drop in oil psi. A bad bearing from lake of oil would! Did the engine get run with low oil after the leak?

I'll be pulling the boat out of the water tomorrow and will try to check out the front main. Oil was always on the dip stick about half ways from the fill mark to the end. Smoke and leak started at the same time so must be related?? Thanks

OK an update. While taking the boat to the ramp I had the engine compartment open and when I hit throttle the hose from the valve cover to the flame arrestor blew mass oil. I assume this is where my oil is coming from. Is this blow by from the rings? What's the next step? New engine?

Ayuh,... Pull the motor, 'n diagnose it's issue,... a Compression, 'n leak-down test is a great start,....

It might be repairable, or, ya maybe a new long block,...

Hellooooo major mechanical work. I'll place my bet on hole in piston or broken piston rings. Best wishes to your sick motor, but this doesn't sound good at all.
