I have a 2001 5.7L GSi pefs serial# 4012044349 3869059 that overall runs very well and most of the time idles right at 600-650rpm. However, every now and then (mostly when you dont want it to) it will idle at about 1000-1100rpm. I KNOW it is not that throttle or throttle body butterfly is sticking. Sometimes i will start it up and it will chug a little bit at idle then kick up in RPM. I can burp the throttle and it still will only come back down to the 1000 range. I can kill the engine start it back up and it idles down in the 600 range just fine. Sometimes i can be running across the lake and bring it down to idle and it runs up in the 800rpm range and if i put it in neutral it goes to the 1000-1100 range. Then i can kill to motor start it right back up and it will idle where it is suppose to at 600rpm. Rarely i have to kill it and start it a couple times but it will idle down and run like nothing is wrong at all. It can get really annoying when idleing along though a cove or when tightening up the rope on a tube if it does not idle down. Any idea what gives????

Get it hooked up to a diagnostic computer and see what is going on. it may not set a trouble code, but you can verify the sensors are reading correctly.

Obvioisly things change in an instant but as of a month ago it was not throwing any. There is only 1 Volvo service place in my area. Does it have to be a special marine type code reader or is there other types that work? Thanks!

Automotive readers do not work on marine engines.

One of these is the way to go. http://www.rinda.com/marine/mtspec.htm#techmate along with the OEM Service Manuals and you should be able to find your problem.

OUCH! $4hundy just for the scan tool! I guess one could look at it both ways if it paid for itself or not either way it means spending lotsa $$$. Maybe i should just take it in and have it scanned? Think im gonna call Troy down to the shop and see what they charge to put in on the scanner. I know auto places around here get $100 just to hook it up!

You have to have the tools if you want to work on these EFI engines.
