I recently a deck boat with a 1988 OMC 5.7L Cobra. With the muffs on, it started after manually choking it briefly. On its first run on the water it ran perfectly. However two days later after starting and idling perfectly, when I engaged it into forward, it won't accelerate past 10m.p.h.
When put back into neutral it idles correctly again. As I limped it back to the dock, I regained power and took it out at hi speed and appeared the problem was fixed. But that was shortlived. I changed the plugs, checked all hoses for vaccuum lock, but that didn't help.
My thoughts are that it may be the choke or carbeurator and thinking a shot of carb cleaner may solve the problem. Any suggestions for someone with limited knowledge on sterndrives would greatly be appreciated.
