I have recently purchased a 1989 Bayliner Ciera 2450 that is giving me the following issue. It has happened exactly this way the last 2 times I have used the boat.
I will get in the boat, things will start up fine, I let it idle for 5 minutes or so while I prepare to leave, everything idles perfectly. I cruise away from the marina and run accross the lake at about 3,000 rpm's and then slow down to an idle. At this point, the idle seems very rough and eventually the engine starts to sputter and eventually dies.
After the boat dies, it will restart just fine, but if I try to shift into gear at this point (either forward or reverse) the engine will immediately die on me. I usually try this a few times, with the same result. My next move is to engage the neutral button after the engine is started and throttle the engine up for several seconds. After several cycles of this I am finally able to shift the engine into gear and proceed normally. I say sevral cycles becuase each time, at least once, I will throttle up in neutral, throttle down and shift into gear fine and try to throttle up moving forward, and the engine will get really loud and sort of sputter but not get the boat moving very fast. So I go back to nuetral and try throttling up in neutral a few more times before the issue finally works out.
Both times this has happened, after I finally get the engine running normally again, everything is fine. Several stops and restarts, and the issue does not happen again. Only seems to happen the first time I run accross the lake, slow down and idle, then try to go back into gear.
Any ideas what this is?
Also, I have some of the same shift problems that the OMC Cobra is famous for, although many times the engine will shift perfectly. I am not sure if this could be related to my other issue.
