so last time i had the boat out (second time this year) I was getting a little bit of black smoke with the exhaust.

was thinking its either
~ bad fuel or too much stabilizer
~ or choke acting up

i want to take a look at the choke tonight as i know it is better to test when cold. what would be your steps in this process to test the choke?

Re: 5.7lx choke testing and adjusting

For a carb:
With the engine COLD and off, advance the throttle a bit remove flame arrestor, examine choke plate. It should be almost closed (within a 1/16th of an inch). If not loosen 3 retaining screws, rotate round housing to obtain a closing.
Test run motor watching to see if choke plate fully opens by normal engine temp.
some types have a bi-metallic srtip that opens and closes the choke plate.
you`ll need to post serial number, type of carb/fuel system 2bbl,4bbl,etc for a more complete answer

4bbl

serial number off motor?

i will have to wait until tomorrow...wifey will get upset if i fire her up at 11pm

looked at it a little tonight, once advanced throttle plate shut (with minimal gap). i am a little concerned that she doesnt open up all the way thus the black smoke?

when i first hit the lake last sunday, started it on the trailer and let it run for maybe 2 o 3 minutes. putted out towards a wake zone (maybe 5 min or so) and she bogged the first few times trying to get on plane. i would hit it, bog, return and hit it again, bog and finally i went into it about half as slow and worked through the bog to a solid run. came off plane about 4 min later, hit it again with no issues. for the next hour still no issues. when i returned to dock to get the trailer i noticed a little bit of black smoke and was thinking that the choke may be trying to close or wasnt opening enough...

or like previously though, bad gas or too much stabilizer....

all in all she ran great though. no studder, no miss and lots of power, least i thought so )

i will play with it tomorrow. got me a long weekend off!!
