Ok my evil father-in-law just gave me an old Ted Williams 5 hp aircooled outboard motor. It says Tecumseh on the "flywheel" which comes to my first question- HOW DO I GET THAT OFF??? There is no spark on the plug. Seems to have good compression. I mixed the fuel to 24:1, hope that is right. And what is the gap on the spark plug once I do get a spark? Any help will do or information about this motor. Chassis# 217/58541-1, Ser#6A 021248. Help it really looks like a cool motor.

Re: 5 hp Ted Williams outboard

My info says 76 5 hp Sears. Built by Eska.My Eska info says 76 is 5.5 77-85 are 5hp.No big deal both use the same Tecumseh air cooled power head AV600.It does have a water cooled exhaust leg with an impeller.
Fuel mix is 32:1 No biggie use up the 24:1 Most flywheels have three threaded holes used with a hormonic balancer puller available at Harbor freight. The ignition is the weak point of a problematic motor the fuel pump (if used)Is a close second for trouble.Parts can be expensive and a pain to get. Motor vibrates,is noisy and somewhat under powered. If you can get it
to run without to much investment it will probably serve ok.You might try a search here for info on where to find parts. You could also try certified parts corp.Yopu may find powerhead parts at a small engine shop.

Re: 5 hp Ted Williams outboard

Thanks for the other input it has helped. I did have spark problems though. I replaced the coil, it is a tecumseh, but I am not getting any spark at all. I attatched a connection light to all the wires to check for bad connections and all seems well. Here is the funny thing; this motor has a kill switch but even when the switch is open and the motor should spark I am getting a connection between the switch. I connect the test light to the open switch and the light turns on. Seems like the light should not do that. So I think there is a short that is killing my spark. Am I correct and what would it be. Looking at the magneto it seems as if there is nothing I can do about it. Very confused and I am not great on motors but I do have common sense that helps out most of the time. DEAL?

Disconnect the wires from the switch and check for spark. Those switches do fail, and not that infrequently. If you have spark, then work on figuring out a replacement for the switch. Any momentary contact push-button switch will work, but choose one with a non-metallic button. All you have to do is figure a way to mount it. I haven't seen that particular engine, but there's probably a way to remove the old one and stick an equivalent new one in its place.

Your problem may be close to being over.
