Re: 50 horse. mercury will not start

Rick&Lisa, please be more specific about your motor, type, model, year built, serial number, cylinders etc.
Is it cranking?
Do you have sparks on all the plugs?
Is there gas flowing to the cylinders?
If yes to all, what is the cylinders pressure? Do you see any smoke coming?
Make sure you have the motor on the muff with water running. If for any reason the motor starts, do not run it WOT while on the muff or at too high rpm’s.
Come back and post your findings, you will find help here.

Re: 50 horse. mercury will not start

i can touch the screws on top of solenoid and the starter will engage and turn the motor. If I turn the key it will not do anything. When I puch in the choke with the switch it will not click and will not click when I turn the key over. The kill switch is in the run position. Any ideas before I burn the thing????

Ricky

Ricky, Sounds like you might have a loose or corroded connection somewhere on the ignition switch (key switch). If not, the switch itself may be bad.

good luck

There a a few in-line fuses around the motor.. Check everyone you find.. They should be on red wires inside a black inline holder... One or both of those will kill everything if blown. However it will crank when jumping the solenoid.

That's my bet!

Befor you start buying parts pay for an hours labor and have it looked at

My guess is the tilt switch it won't allow the motor to crank if the engine is tilted
When it goes Bad it won't crank with the key
but will at the solenoid
