my buddy was over helping me with my motor yesterday and was saying that while at the lake last week he went from wide open foward to reverse by accident because a pwc cut in front of him in his pontoon boat. he said after that the the motor never would make as much power and he was about 700 to 1000 rpm down. i told him i would ask on here and see if i could get some answers as to what he might have done.

it is a 2008 (i think) 50 hp 4 stroke mercury

I'm thinking the throttle cable may have slipped in the hold down clamp on the motor and is now out of adjustment. I think a very fast pull on the throttle handle could may be cause that. have him check to see if the throttle on the motor is open all the way when the throttle lever is all the way forward.
