To disconnect the shift rod you remove a bolt (it's really called a pin) from the shift rod lever. All this is located at the very front bottom of the engine and is not real easy to see unless you get your head in the right position. You do it from the port side of engine and it helps to use a swivel socket on a long thin extension to get at the bolt. To put the bolt back in you can use the same socket setup or one of those long thin extension grabber things (I forget what you call them). If your socket is flopping around too much, put a tube of grease in the refrigerator for a while and then pack the swivel socket with the grease to make it "stiffer".
