I have a 1973 Evenrude 50 hp on the last trip out it ran perfect till we where making the trip back to the ramp. I had slowed down to idle to wait for my brother and when i went to power up it sputtered and started to die i took the cowling off to check on it and noticed it was spitting gas out of the lower carb. The carbs have just been rebuilt and had new coils installed.

I am thinking the lower coil is bad and that it is not firing but would that cause the gas to be spitting out of the front of the carb.

I have not had a chance to do a complete check but wanted to get some places to start looking.

Thanks for the Help

Brian

I have read that one cause of this problem could be a broken reed valve in the head behind the carb. Do a search on this site, and you'll find lots of info. Good luck.

When idling, hold a sheet of paper in front of the carb throat. If it pulses away from the carb face and gets wet, I would inspect the reeds like "z" said. Coil has nothing to do with carb/reed issue. A sticky float may give the same results. I would check out the needle and seat as well.
Good luck and let us know

Spark has nothing to do with this problem. If you have gas flooding out of your carb then you either have a stuck open float and needle or a reed problem.

Remove your carbs. Then follow the books directions on removing the intake plate. Your reeds are located on the plate behind the intake. After removal try holding the reeds up towards a bright light. There should be a little bit of light showing through the tip of the reeds. No more than 10 thousands though. Make sure you don't blow any heavy forced air through back of reeds if you clean them. Check for broken or stretched reeds. You cannot turn them over and reuse them so don't try. If one reed is bad the whole reed valve assembly should be replaced as a total unit. The cost is around $90.00 but it's better than trying to jeery-rig to get by. Your manual should tell you each step to take. Just follow it to the "T".

i tought he nent a little spitting out of the carbs throught.
the piston is not creating power and so less vacuum to get a good suction going thats why it could be spitting a little.
i agree not flooding.
check for good clean connections and ground.check the coils or swap them.
eliminate the spark isseu before unneccesary wrenching.

good luck
