I have a 1999 50 hp johnson on 20 ft pontoon.Last night while going through a shallow channel I briefly hit bottom with thr trim up.The engine revved high. After that it started cutting out and died.Restarted and just made it to dock. This morning pulled plugs-alittle wet and very clean.almost new clean.wont idle without throttle and going forward throttles up with hesitation and cuts out and dies.maybe fuel filter????

Check out the flywheel key. It may have sheared when you took the hit. A little bit out of time will cause what you are seeing.

Wet as in water or wet as in fuel oil mix? Very clean implies water intrusion into cylinder and steam cleaning. Obviously, this resulting poor running. Possible head gasket failure.

Maybe you have two issues...sheared woodruff key as a result hitting bottom and head gasket problems....with the latter having been occurring prior to hitting bottom.

How did the motor run prior to hitting bottom? Did you have "full" power ability?

Yes, the other signs as you mentioned. I would do a compression test on the cylinders to see if it'll give another clue.
