My 1971 Johnson outboard wiil not shift into reverse, it shifts and goes forward at 1/2 speed. when in neutral,it still moves forward very slowly. Have checked the shifter cable and linkage, did not notice any abnormalities??

Have you tried unhooking the cable at the motor and manually operated the shift lever? That will eliminate the controls from the issue.

------------------
I'm going to invent a TCW3/citronella oil blend and make a fortune!

This machine requires TYPE C gear oil in the lower unit. Check to make sure you have power to one solenoid in nuetral and power to both in reverse. Green wire is nuetral /green and blue both energized is reverse. If there is too much water in the unit the hydraulic pump cannot provide pressure to shift the clutch dog. Good luck

Trafficman did say "shifter cable" and "linkage" in his post. I guess I'm now confused as to the motor being electric shift or not. Trafficman? Push button or lever?

------------------
I'm going to invent a TCW3/citronella oil blend and make a fortune!

if it is electric shift then adrians advive is sound. when all else fails in these things forward will usually continue to work.
dave

------------------
no replacement for displacement!
