The cotter pin you are referring to secures the castle nut to the prop shaft which holds you prop on. If it goes the prop will go with it. Don't think your motor has a shear pin.<br /><br />You probably haven't gotten an answer on the temp as most guages have a range from around 100 to 220. I have never seen a 10-40. You can get an accurate check with temperature sticks but most folks will touch their finger to the head of a warm running motor. It should be hot but you should be able to leave your finger there for a couple of seconds. If it is cold or at air temperature you probably need a thermostat. If it burns you finger when you touch it you probably have a cooling problem and the first thing to do is replace your impeller.
