Just put a new starter on 1998 50hp johnson. We used it last weekend and it worked beautifully. Went to start it up this morning on the hose before we headed to the ramp and all it does is spin. the drive gear is not engaging the worm gear. Battery is fully charged and all my connections are clean. Stupid thing is only a week old. Did I miss something?

If your sure all the elec. connections are good and clean turn the starter drive gear by hand and see if it travels up the shaft.(it may be stuck) oil the bendix shaft. Its not unheard of to get a bad starter.but I would make sure the gear isnt stuck,(that happens at times also)
Turn the gear clockwise,Does it go up?

The gear goes up easily doesn't stick at all. What could cause this? Any idea?

"all it does is spin. the drive gear is not engaging the worm gear."

Did you oil the shaft as recommended? If yes, then swap in another known-good battery and try that.

This problem is typically insufficient CCAs (Amps) going through the starting system. This is sometimes the first sign of a battery losing power below CCAs required to turn the engine. If the battery is charged to 12V it may still have insufficent amps.
