Re: 50 HP johnson wont shift gears 1984 2cyl.

I dont know if your engine is an electric shift or not, if it is, I know little to nothing about it.

If it is a mechanical (uses cables), maybe check your cables and control box,

Follow the cables to the linkage in your motor. May need adjusting to shift properly. If these are all working fine, there should be a shaft running down your mid section to the lower unit where the prop is. (I dont know if you have any access panels you could take off, if you do, inspect there.

If there is no panel, remove the lower unit and work your shifter. (removing lower unit is kind of an easy job, puting them back on is a little harder..requires patience and sometimes a third or fourth hand), See if the rod going down the mid section turns. If it does, shift the lower unit using the gear that hooks to the rod you looked at. If it works fine and the prop moves when you turn the shaft (drive shaft), that gear probably was not lined up corectly. Try to shift lower unit into nutral and the control box lever into nutral and put lower unit back on.

However, If it is stuck, or moves dont force it and dont go any further until you at least get a little better help from the experts here,a manual or give it to a mechanic.

Hope this was helpful, hopefully it is just an adjustment or busted cable.
