Hi,
Recently while running, my 50 hp Mariner 4cyl got stuck in a high idle and while driving to the ramp, I popped it in and out of gear a few times so I didnt come in too hot. It was pretty rough!!

Anyway, I rebuilt the carbs (broken venturi was sticking the throttle open), put it all back together and now the motor is hard to shift into reverse- and when I do shift it, the motor never actually goes into reverse, just throttles.

Did the gears get jacked from the high idle shifting? Is this a DYI repair or mechanic job?

What coould be the problem? Im at a loss. Any help appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: 50 hp Mariner-LOST REVERSE!! HELP

There are a couple of pretty simple preliminary tests you can do. First is this a remote controled boat or is it a Tiller control. If it's remote you just need to disconnect the shift cable and then manually move the shift lever while it's running on the hose. If it goes into gear smoothly then you just need to adjust your shift cable. If it won't go into gear then check your idle and make sure it's not exceeding 750 RPM in neutral. If that's good then you should take it in and have it looked at.

I would check the shift shaft coming down from the motor or shift cables. When you blow the part in the lower unit that my have broke would not cause hard shifting. But I would drain the gear case and look for chunks. If some thing broke in the lower unit is would have been the slide gear that moves on the gear to shift your f-n-r.

Re: 50 hp Mariner-LOST REVERSE!! HELP

Well,
Lesson learned. I found that the locking hooks that grab the trim adjustment rod were resting on the rod and not able to open up. Pretty stupid not to check that but I didnt think it would still allow me to push the lever down into reverse and get some throttle.

First boat so I'm learning. Thanks for the help guys.
Next project: raise the motor 1.5 inches ona notched transom. Jackplate? rebuild transom? it never ends...
