50 hp Merc Problems

Well here's my situation. I've never owned a boat before, so I decided to pick up a fixer upper and see what I could make out of it.

So I found a 1957 ALuminum boat which came with a broken 1989 50 HP Mercury outboard aswell as a working 65 HP Mercury of the same year.

Well after switching the 65 over on to this boat I realized that it was going to be just too big and heavy for this boat. The shaft being considerably longer made me foresee a number of problems running with this setup.

So now I'm back to square one hoping to be able to repair my 50 hp. Apparently all thats broken is a water seal near the propeller. But I also noticed a small crack in the lower unit(can this be welded). I guess what I'm trying to ask is.. is there anyway of testing this unit without a prop on it to determine whether or not it is a fixable project?

Thanks a lot, I really hope this post made some kind of sense. If you would like me to clarify anything just ask. This looks like a promising project, just need a working motor and Mercontrol shifter(whole other problem) Basically red handle is stuck about an inch away from neutral but will go all the way forward..

Would appreciate it if anyone could shed any light on these issues. Thanks a lot

Can you post a picture of the crack as sometimes depending on area these cannot be welded due to housing distorting during welding.
