50 hp Merc shif linkage stuck

I went to remove the lower end. The shift linkage is a turnbuckle/ lock nut. The lock nur loosened OK, but the turnbuckle nut won't turn. I can feel the whole rod spring (torque?) when I try to back the nut off the lower rod threds. It needs to seperate there so the lower unit will drop. penetrating fluid hasn't helped.
I see no way to hold the rod while turning the nut wiith any more force. I don't want to twist the rod up inside (or worse). Whats the trick?

If it's been in salt water, Heat...... With a torch.
