50 hp on a Mark 2 classic?

Hey guys,

I am a bit confused on how much a Mark2 Classic (HD) can take. It says on the official Zodiac 40hp, but then on some sites they show a 50 hp will give you best speed, performance etc. Thing is that a friend of mine is about to get one, and obviously want the best combination. There will be waterskiing too, so these 10 horses are definitely welcome. Anyone has been through this too, and what are the eventual consequences of that 50hp? Will it damage the transom, will it go too fast etc. Since the Tohatsu engine has the same weight on a 50 as on a 40 (697cc.), we are really thinking of giving it a go. I appreciate your comments beforehand.

of-coarse it can be done ... and no that little difference won't damage the transom .... but for waterskiing the extra hp would be needed ..... give it a go ...

Right now I run a 40HP Yamaha on my MK 2 C. There are many times I wish I had the extra 10. I can't get a slalom skier up (a 200 pounder anyway), and I can barely get two tubes planed out (but once I do it's great). Is your friend going to buy from a dealer? I would think dealers would be leary about putting an "oversized" motor due to warranty resctictions and liability. If your friend does put a 50 in it, tell him to wear his tether at all times. Man those things move and turn hard. I've been tossed a couple times and thank God those tethers work. Good luck.
