50 hp rude just decarbed and need to reset timing please help

i have a 50 hp rude mod #e50belcd..yesterday i used some seafoam to decarb the motor and wow what a lot of build up this motor had..there was a pile of gray like gell sitting under my prop after two go rounds with the old seafoam..that stuff realy works!before i used it i could not get my motot to idel less then 1500 but now it will idel as low as 450. but what im needing help with is resetting the timing. i have a manual but it says to use a timing gun and test tank. i was wondering if there is any way around this.?<br />thank you for reading<br />ben .c

Are you trying to set idle timing or wot timing?

Dont worry too much about the exact number for idle. You just need to set it with the motor in the water (backpressure) so it idles correctly in gear.<br /><br />If your motor was that carboned up you may want to check your top rpms to make sure youre at or near 6000.<br /><br />Good luck!

at w.o.t. im only running at 3200 rpms. the boat plain with no probs so i was thinking about buying a 17p prop. i have a 15 now. what do you think about that..and also how do i go about changing my wot rpms to get them higher...i took it out today and messed with it while i was in the water and i got the motor to idel at 900 and when i put it into gear it goes down to about 350, but it is running so much smother since the decarb..<br />thank you for your input,<br /> ben c.

Are you sure your tach is right ? going to a smalle pitch will increase top rpm. You should have 5800-6000 on a correctly set tach. Setting tach on an incorrect number will make it read wrong figures. I Exa you could be iddling at 1300, going down to 600 when into gear.

What kind of boat and what is your top speed? Is the Tach set on "6" pole on the back?

i just checked the tach and is is set on six..and all wires are good and tight... the boat is a 1986 glasstream 160v bassboat.my top speed at w.o.t. is around 30-32 mph <br />thank you guys for the feedback<br />ben c.
