Hi Ben

Sounds like an automotive Tach or I/O Tach. Pole setting should be 6...Where did you get the Tach and what brand is it? There are some motors that do use the 2,3,4 pole settings, but OMC is not one of them

I'm sure that OMC use a 12 pole charging system, and the setting on the tach should be 6. There should be instructions with your tach. I've got a Faria tach and the settings go from 4 to 12 poles. 12 poles set as 6, 10 poles set as 5, etc. The instructions are printed on the back of the tach.

That's not a "2" pole, but a 12 pole you got there. Any Tach that can be set to 6 will work.

Not sure, it's a bit confusing to me, but I think there are 3 coils, so hence the 12/6 poles? I don't know! Something like that!

I read up on it today, and the stator has 12 magnets ;o) I think that's what makes it a 12 pole system.

If not, then I'm even more confused than I was before ;o)

Re: 50 hp rude tachometer pole settings question..

You need to find out if the tach is for a 2 stroke outboard with electronic ignition and an alternator output for the tach. Some tachs are for points ignition, some are for inbard engines, etc, etc.

If it is meant for CD ignition, and it only has settings for 1,2,3 or 4 cylinders, set it as for a 3 cylinder 2 stroke engine. I had a Smiths tach fitted that had the same system, and the 3 cylinder 2 stroke was the setting that it advised. My engine is a 2 cylinder 55.

I was never convinced that it read right though, even though it was new, so I've replaced it with the Faria tach that has proper pole settings.

Good luck
Steve
