Have a 50 hp,507Y8D, Runs good at full throttle and at idle, for some reason everything in between seems to be slow to respond,it catches after a few seconds, I have A Clymers manual and have adjusted the idle mixture scew as instructed in manual, it does nothing for this, I have rebuilt carb, fuel pump, fresh 50:1 gas mix...any ideas?

Try richening the idle mix screw 1/4 turn from where it's at and re-try. Failing that I'd be looking into a possible bad crank seal or an air leak into the block.

Re: 50 hp throttle control

Check the oil drain system for clogs. This is a series of small tubes or a casting on the bypass side which channels excess unburned oil from the bypass (transfer port) to either be recycled or burned in another cylinder. The casting has reeds and screens inside it which can get clogged or malfunction. If this system is not functioning properly, the oil builds up inside the engine and causes running problems, primarily at lower speeds. Also, if it is leaking air, there could be your problem, From the model number, I don't know which year your engine is. Different years used different systems. But they all are on the bypass side of the engine. (Starboard.)
