50 HP w Gearcase Problem

Just as I was about to head to the Hatchie river with my boat that is powered by a 2002 50 HP Merc with oil injection, I noticed that the two bolts that attach the "propeller shaft bearing carrier" were crooked and the aluminum shell was bent. I removed the propeller and the two bolts. They were both slightly bent but the little pieces of aluminum that came off with them tells me I must have hit something pretty hard at some point in time. I do recall hitting some stumps pretty good in Bayou D'Arbonne a few years ago.

I have the shop manual for this motor - otherwise I wouldn't know the names of these parts.

Anyway, my question for anyone who can help is: Can I remove the propeller shaft bearing carrier without removing the propeller shaft and all that will come with it?

Thanks for your help.

If you hold the shaft in it will stay went removing the carrier or just pull them together, if you do them together make sure the shift pin is greased on reassm. so it don't drop out

So if I understand you correctly, the bearing carrier should come off by sliding it along the shaft while holding the shaft in place. Is that right? But if the shaft does move with the carrier, is it difficult to get it back in and properly aligned. I ask this because I have been looking at other problems on this site and alignment of gear case parts seems to be critical.

Thanks for you help.

Yes, it's possible to remove the carrier and rev gear only but it 's not a big dealm if the shaft comes too. Just make sure the shift pin is inn it when reinstalling it, Also there is no reason to remove the gear case from the engine to replace the carrier
