I have to remove the foot off my 50hp 86 outboard mercury,
Pls advise if the removal of the 2 nuts on the side and the rear nut is all that is required. The repair shop indicates just to drop the foot off to bring it in, but should I leave it in gear or neutral. it there other connections to remove once the nuts are removed. Pls advise on the best amnual for future reference , but for now I must remove the foot to repair.
Thanks

Re: 50hp 86 Mercury LU removal

I've got a 1986 60 hp apart right now. It has 2-nut's that you take off completely when the lower unit has dropped a little, then inside from the top on the torque tab is another one mine had a plastic cap/grommet that you pop out ( mine was a like 12 point bolt I believe I took a 12mm socket and got it out, it wasn't a normal hex head bolt. Plus one more right at the very back of the foot on the bottom in the center I believe it's a 1/2 inch bolt head. Good luck. Total of 2 bolts and 3 nuts. Oh yeah a 5/8 nut in the middle from the bottom almost forgot. Hope this helps.

thanks, it looks like I can drop the unit but does the unit have to be in gear or neutral so I donot have any problems putting it back on?
Is there one or 2 shafts that will come with the foot?
Is there a water tube that will come with the foot?
