Just returned from a canada fishing trip. Lodge provided boat/motors had problems. The starter bendix would not engage the flywheel. When the owner contacted his dealer for replacement bendixes, he was sent 11 complete new starters....with different part numbers. (Silent Recall?) It seems that the shaft isn't hardened enough and develops a wear burr that hangs up the bendix. In a pinch, you can pry on the bendix while running the electric starter to help it engage. That's what we did to get back 8 miles to the lodge. The lodge owner is not happy with this model Merc for this and other problems.

Just an FYI about the starter!

[colour=blue]What year 50hp?

I have a 2004 model - no problems so far (touch wood)!

2005, he's on a 2 yr plan.
Other probs include clogged injectors (even with a fuel filter) and poor spark plug life (NGK's last the longest).

[colour=blue]I can honestly say that apart from a blown fuse (that was my fault), I have had not one problem but I'll be extra nice to the starter from now on o:) .

Since this motor is used EVERY day during the season, as opposed to just weekends for most of us, that this is just a look at an accellerated life test and the long term problems that will be encountered.
