I have a 1973 50 hp Johnson that I'm trying to remove the lower unit. I have removed the 5 bolts from the bottom and unbolted the shift rod. The lower unit will not budge I think that the drive shaft is stuck in the powerhead. Could any one give some ideas to get it to come loose.
Thanks in advance,
Chris

Turn upside down and fill with penatrating oil. Sometimes this will help lossen the crud. I have also used crudcutter from gumout. Let sit overnite. It may take some pressure and prying. A little wobbling side to side will help also.

5 bolts isn't enough. Remove the torque tab fin and above it you will find the other bolt.

the five bolts I was refering to was removing the torque tab, the bolt under the fin, the two bolts on both sides. After removing all bolts the unit will not budge.

Not enough bolts. How about the large bolt forward of the torque tab cavity, between the cavity and the main part of the gearcase? As I recall, it takes a 9/16 or 5/8 hex socket.
