50hp Merc Lower unit Installation

I tried six times to get the lower unit back in correctly after putting a pump kit in everytime i get it in it is stuck in gear i have taken out repeatedly and adj. many ways still wont shift out of gear,i reinstalled the lower unit while it was in reverse,each time any suggestions?

i need to know the same thing.....i took off the lower unit tonight to check the impeller.....i tried to put the lower back on twice, couldnt get it to come out of forward....shifted into forward before i started the procedure and afterwards i couldnt get neutral of reverse....have an 86 45hp classic fifty.

I had to tyr twice...it was the short shifter splined shaft not mating well into its upper female coupler. Mine had a big plastic placeholder that lines up the upper female coupler - the plastic piece should be all the way up in the space of the female part.

I lightly gripped the shift shaft w/ vise grips with the nuts barely holding the LU in place, so while pushing the LU up, I was able to wiggle the vise grips a little, and it popped right into the female coupler and the LU fit snug. Shifter was in FWD. Search my posts for pics.
