Just found that the 1975 50hp I recently bought has the tilt lock broken on it. The OEM manual does not describe how to remove it in order to make the repair. The broken part is the sloted part that is on the side of the exhaust and swivel.

Anyone ever replace one before?

wow, would have thought someone on here would have done this before but I guess not.

The actual part that is broken is the port Stop Link.

Go to shop.evinrude.com and look up the parts diagram for your mtr. You may get a better idea on how to take it apart and repair it.

Re: 50hp tilt lock broken

I do have the original OMC manual for this with the parts breakdown and it doesn't go into repairing this piece. Explains how to remove the swivel and stern clamps along with the exhaust tubes. Which are both quite extensive proceedures. But doesn't say if this piece can be removed w/o taking the whole stern clamp assembly apart. Or even if it is possible to reair this while the engine is still mounted on the boat.

I do know that this part is NLA new so a used one

Re: 50hp tilt lock broken

Read post # 3 again.

Read number 4 again. I do have a very nice parts breakdown in the manual that looks much clearer than the one on shopevinrude.

Best I can tell is that it looks like the port side clamp needs to be removed as it doesn't show how the shaft lever comes out or is attached to the swivel bracket.

you'll get more help if you give a part number.

Re: 50hp tilt lock broken

Sure I can do that.

It is listed as Stop Link, Port. Part number is 0385656 and is listed as number 48 in the exhaust housing section on shopevinrude

Re: 50hp tilt lock broken

Well now that the weather has finally broken I was able to try and tackle this again.

Here is what I found for those that may run into this in the future. 1st thing that need to be done is that the engine must be removed from the boat. There is a screw with a nut that goes through the Stop Link and into the transom clamp then there is a small screw that holds the Bellcrank Lever located by the pivot tube between the transom clamps. Once that screw is removed the Bellcrank will slide out and the Stop Link will fall out.

In this case the Port Stop Link is NLA. The Bellcrank is $105.00 and the Stop Link Screw is $30.00 from BRP.

Guess I'll have to see if I can straighten and repair the Stop Link or start calling the salvage guys and see if I can locate some nice used ones.

Hi
I have exactly the same problem but with a 50hp Johnson.
Did you ever find an instructional video about the disassembly process, any help is appreciated as mine is driving me nuts.
Cheers Max

Re: 50hp tilt lock broken

Never had any luck locating a video for this. I had to remove the engine from the boat in order to have access to make the repair.

To remove these parts the shoulder bold that goes thru the Stop Link bracket must be removed and then under the transom mount there is a screw through a clamp which hold the Bellcrank in place which must be loosened. Once that is done the Bellcrank, tilt knob, pulls out. The Bellcrank also passes thru the Stop Link bracket which is what this bracket piviots on.

Hope this helps.

Re: 50hp tilt lock broken

Hi
Thanks for shedding more detail on this for me, I'll have a good look at it on the weekend, I can see that the bellcrank has some horizontal movement, so I'll have a go at it and see if I can get it off, I'll take some step by step photos, may help someone else cause it's a major pain!
Thanks Max

I'll watch for the photos.
Stop Link is No Longer Available, I believe the Bellcrank is available but not cheap.

What I think is amazing is I'm sure I'm not the only one this has happened to, but search all over the net and not one reference to repairing it other than on here......

Re: 50hp tilt lock broken

Have to agree on all counts. I was unable to find anything online and as you state with the sheer number of these outboard out there in the world we cannot be the exceptions.

It's really not a difficulr job once it's figured out. In my case I couldn't tilt the engine up at all because of the broken and bent Stop Link bracket. But if you can raise yours to the full tilt up position you should be able to access that screw and clamp.

Re: 50hp tilt lock broken

This repair most likely has been made before, but most folks who make the repair don't report on sites like this. You are now adding to the knowledge base--and that's quite a good thing. Thanks.

As I said I'm a self taught weekend shed mechanic, but I'll give this a red hot go and post all the steps in pics that I can... Thanks again

Same here and will add as I have gone in other posts that there are times that even the original manual is of little or no help when it comes to repairing something that is broken. But they sure do come in handy to keep from breaking something that is not broken.

Hello, July, 2023 - I'm new to boating and was trying to figure out myself, I have a 1991 Johnson 40hp outboard. The Tilt lock lever broke off and I couldn't understand why I am unable to tilt the motor (the motor and as far as I can see all else is in intact, the motor starts beautifully and runs well). The part number I have is 334438, only this broke off. Thanks for your thread above to finally find this situation exists in the past, is there another way to try to tilt up the 1991 Johnson motor up without the lever and without removing the motor?
