My father in law just gave me a Johnson 5 1/2 hp motor it has been sitting since about 1999. I just got a gas tank off of ebay and will be starting it up for the first time. I have tried to read up about this motor as much as I can. I want to replace the spark plugs some people say jc4 and some say jc6 which is better? I also plan on changing lower unit oil before I start for the first time. Is there anything else I should do before it's first start? I know it is not frozen up as it still pulls easy.I have no boat experience but have worked on cars for years.

We need the model number, MW.<br /><br />If it is a CD series it uses Champion J4C plugs gapped at .030"<br /><br />If it is CD-20 or earlier it uses a 24:1 mix; CD-21 and later use a 50:1 mix.<br /><br />Go to Outboard Non-repair and read the FAQ draft for bringing an engine back to life.
