So heres what i got.
14 foot smokercraft alum
years back the PO hit the trailer with the hull(i know, he was old and tired when me and my father bought the boat from him). anyway he patched the hole with a fiberglass patch of some sort.like the mesh looking stuff and it seems to hold just fine. the hole isnt huge, maybe 1"x2" maybe a little better.

for a little more piece of mind would covering it with 5200 seal it for good or at least until i have enough time to fix it myself the right way this winter.
is there a better sealant for this, any advice

thanks

Re: 5200 over patch

As long as he prepped the aluminum surface correctly for the glass to get a good bite, which it seems it has, why worry about it? Get some aluminum paint to closely match the hull, if the looks bother you. In other words, it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Until you want to fix it the correct way...

Re: 5200 over patch

thanks for the advice guys

it really aint broke but i dont want it to give out while on the lake so im just thinkin about putting on some extra insurance.

will the 5200 work as a huge flat glob maybe 8"x8" over the patch to seal it.

Re: 5200 over patch

i read that link incoop and that waterweld stuff sounds very interesting to me.
this patch is below waterline and has never leaked that i know of.so i may be over thinking this.
but i want some insurance till i fix it right this winter.

5200 is not right for this. JB Weld, Waterweld or any type of plumber's epoxy would be better. Doesn't sound necessary, but it's cheap peace of mind I suppose.
