I have a technical question regarding Ign. Condensers....can I replace my existing Condensers which are (Phelon FG-607) with a 398-693 ??
I see where 398-713 is called for but I have these new 398-693 ones, do these 398-693 condensers meet the standards i.e.(mld rating) for my {Merc. Mark 7 7.5hp Serial # 759821} I'm restoring this old beauty and want to be sure the 398-693 are OK to use...any light you can shed on this would greatly be appreciated.;)

Re: 54 Mercury Mark 7 Ingintion Condenser question

Hi Capt.,
Believe it or not, I prefer the condensers for the Johnrudes of the era. Can be gotten here on iBoats, part number 18-5199 (OEM #580321). They tend to be a bit more stout than the original Phelon style. Takes a little modification to fit it in the confines of the Phelon armature plate, but it can be done. I have a KG7 Hurricane that uses them and it's a 2-pull motor, idles beautifully, and goes like stink!

What kind of mods are required Admiral Scott to the 18-5199s ?..also do you know the micro farad rating on these 18-5199 ?...I know the Merc 398-713 which are the recommended ones for the Mark 7 with Phelon Mag are .015-.019 uF.
Wow the prices are very attractive for the 18-5199 at 4.00 ea, compared to the 12-13 dollar 398-713

Re: 54 Mercury Mark 7 Ingintion Condenser question

Actually, I don't know the mf rating on them. I do know they're similar, though. An old boat racer told me the trick to using them in place of the Phelons (which he referred to as Failin's) and he had one of the sweetest sounding Mercury Mark 20Hs you'd ever heard. Condensers were always the weeks point in those mags. I think the last one I did needed the mounting tab trimmed a bit to fit in the spot of the old condenser. The Phelon sat horizontally, while the OMC sits vertically. No biggie - just need to trim with a file. Don't use a grinder as the heat can kill the condenser. Doesn't have to look pretty - just has to fit and mount securely...
