I need to remove a long shaft extension and change the impeller in this motor, I've pulled all the bolts holding the lower unit and the extension on, but I can't find any sort of shift lever union like the newer motors. Any tips on getting this old girl apart? My factory manual is in the mail

If I remember correctly, on that year motor, you have to pull the power head to disconnect the shift linkage.
A clue is to look for an ovel plate on the exhaust housing. No plate, pull the powerhead.
I am sure someone with expert knowledge will chime in soon and correct me if I am wrong.

Yep, you're right, I hadn't thought to look for a cover, opened it up and there she is, thanks!

You only pull the powerhead on the 5.5 & 7.5 hp motors. The bigger ones either have the window described or the linkage is in the space between the lower unit and the midsection and is accessed after you remove the lower unit bolts and drop it down and inch.
