I was lucky enough to pick up a 55 Bucaneer 5D11B motor w a manual.
was a little surprised to find it 17 1/2" clamp rest to antivent plate. for 15" transom.
This puts the antivent plate 2 1/2 inches below the bottom. They also recommend cutting the stern of the keel at a 10 degree angle to improve "free
running performance"Of course this would be a wooden boat probably with a pretty solid size keel.Probably could play with that 2 1/2" leg length.
5D11 is 49 lbs,5D12 52 lbs.the Johnson/Evinrude 5.5s are rated for over 12 mph.The max rpm 4,500.I wonder how much speed we could tease out of a stock 5/5.5 ?

the reason is the location of the water pump, and they were not self priming. the pump is where the bulge is in the leg. 17 1/2 was common up into the 60's.

And as the book suggests, in those days boats were made of wood and had keels. Sure you can jack it up a bit but you are not going to get any blazing speeds out of a 5hp. It can plane the right boat if you are lucky. Maybe even impress you on the right hydroplane. But the mercs with their quickie lower units will dust you off.
