no worries Krs1 not too many posts. are you sure it's going into gear fully? do you hear or feel any grinding when you slip it into gear? does the propeller spin at all when you put it into gear, or just slowly? you may want to check the shift rod connector by removing the little oval shaped metal tab on the right side of the leg. do a search here in the forums and you'll find out how to adjust it properly.

Sounds odd. It should be the exact same as forward except backwards. Are you sure it's going in reverse at all? And if you give it gas does the engine speed up? If it's in forward and you give it gas does it speed up?

Look around the flywheel and timing plate. There may be a throttle stop for reverse. Just take the cowl off and play with the throttle and shift and see what works what. (not running of course).

It shouldn't go fast in reverse. There is a safety feature on these motors to allow them to only go about half RPM's in reverse, so you don't swamp your boat. On the side of your powerhead, you'll see a shifter lock that goes from your shifter, to the mag plate. It is number 4 here.

http://www.marineengine.com/parts/v...evinrude-johnson/FORM_2104/FORM_210400001.htm

On the mag plate, there is a stop assembly with a step in it. You can see it here. it is number 14

http://www.marineengine.com/parts/v...evinrude-johnson/FORM_2104/FORM_210400001.htm

On the shifter, there is a pin, that pivots this lever and the stop assembly works on this shifter lock, with reverse to make it stop on the step. It's often that these are worn badly or out of whack and they don't work properly. Those that work properly, will keep your motor from revving too high in reverse. Some motors also have a step in that stop assembly, to keep it going from a fast idle in neutral, so you don't over rev your engine and create a run away condition and blow your powerhead.

You'll also notice, that if your engine dies or is shut off, it'll be hard to shift between gears, until you turn your throttle way down:cool:

Zephyr gets the reward for coming up with the correct answer. One small comment to add--if the mag/carburetor sync is off, it will be even slower in reverse.

But bottom line is it isn't supposed to go fast in reverse. Come to think of it, my car will go about 100 MPH in forward. I've probably never had it up over 2 MPH in reverse.

Thanks for all replys! It runs full speed in forward like it should. It's shifts very smoothly for an old motor and does shift into reverse, the thing is it won't go any faster than idle. I will rev it to go faster but no juice? I will check out the options given above and see what happens.

Another thing so far unmentioned is the propeller is grossly inefficient in reverse. Besides that, it sucks the exhaust into the prop, making it cavitate like crazy.

Why, what are you trying to accomplish here? OMC made some special sailboat auxillaries to overcome these problems if that is what this is all about.

I want my motor to push my boat in reverse faster than idle that's it. The motor runs perfect otherwise

Ahhhhh yes. The cam follower. Yes, that is the other piece if brass mounted on the mag plate. you'll see that on the front and it kinda looks like a "shark fin":D (as described from another member on another thread) You'll find that it has two mounting bolts, to make adjust ments on it. The left mounting bolt will be going through a round hole and this has no adjustment. The right bolt goes through a longated hole and will allow you to adjust the cam follower in or out. On the cam follower, you'll see a line. When that line is pointing at the center of the roller (on the carb lever) it should be touching at that point. It sounds like your's may not, if you only get an idle in reverse. Someone may have possibly set it up that way, so some youngins can use the motor, out on the lake.:D The high side on the left, however is set up in the same position and will work the same, even when your right side is adjusted in or out.

I always love your humor in these posts, F_R:D
