I have been having troubles recently with getting the motor to idle, and well I got it to where I think it will run but heres my question. I am able to pull the second plug wire off the no 2 cylinder and the engine has no change. When I pull the no 1 plug wire off the no 1 cylinder it dies. So does this thing only run on one cylinder at idle and when the stator plate is advance the second cylinder kicks in? I used a spark plug tester on the second wire and it is getting spark. What do you guys think?

NO! Both plugs should fire. Sounds like a coil issue to me. Try swapping the coils around and see if that makes a difference. (Switch the coil from the cylinder that is firing to the one that isn't and see if the dead cylinder changes.) Good luck...

Check you compression in the two cylinders. If you do not have a gauge handy, you s/n be able to hold your thumb over the plug?s hole if you have good compression. Is that correct Techs?? jow

You should have spark to both cylinders all the time. Pull the flywheel, check your condensors/points. My 73 did the exact same thing, and one of the condensors had worked loose and got chewed up. Try replacing the condensors as it has likely not been done yet. I am expecting your motor to have magneto ignition right? The thumb hole compression trick is not a reliable way to check the psi.

compression is good on both cylinders about 145 each.. it is flywheel magneto ign. coils does not seem to be firing as i did the spark test again, which is odd, it works one time and not the other? im pretty much convinced the coil is the culprit. but on another question. would this cause overheating? i added a tell tale and it blows steam after it gets too hot to touch the block. i dont want to run it if its going to just get hotter so i have just been shutting it down. one other question is, i used the seloc manual to set the timing too the degrees of advance and the second cyl is gapped a little bigger for synchronization, could this be the firing problem? i know there supposed to both be .020 but i just did it like the book said, and it runs great except for these few problems... oh and thermostat is good i tested. unless its sticking for some odd reason.

If you have magneto ignition there will not be coils. Send a picture of the side of the motor with the wires. Are the coils you tested mounted on the side of the motor? Do you have magna power ignition by chance? Overheating, got a steady flow of water from the telltale? changed the impeller yet this season?
