Cleaned the carbs and all looks good. New coils plugs and wires. after sitting awhile, when first started, it will idle good for a couple of minutes then it will pop and shut off. It starts back up and will run all day but wont Idle. what are the things that could cause this?

Welcome to iboats, glad to see more GATORS here. when you cleaned the carb, did you soak metal parts, blow out all the orifices with compressed air or areosol carb cleaner. and reassemble with a new carb kit. sounds like the idle jet is clogging. what are you idle rpms. should be 650 -700 in gear in the water. have you check compression, should be over 100 psi.

i also highly recommend doing a decarb, link to follow, it's like an enema for you engine, get's the crud out so it can work freely. buy seafoam (auto parts store) put some in a spray bottle, and spray it into the carbs, until it almost stalls, use this instead of buying deep creep (same stuff) follow the followng instructions, this may solve your problem

Sorry im not sure if this is the right way to respond should i use this reply/quote tab or instant reply or what?
my brother has been doing the work on the carbs and he did not use a kit but said it was clean looking when he opened them and he used cleaner and compressed air and said floats are set right and that seats look good. I dont know about the Idle jets where are they and how do we adjust them?
Also what parts will come with a kit that are critical?
when we first got the boat it ran but was using alot of fuel and we found a bad diaphram in the fuel pump. I rebuilt it and it ran better but still burns alot of fuel but not nearly as much as when the pump was dumping fuel.
I have burned probly 25 gallons out tooling around but not Idling is a problem.my brothers got the carbs now and is going to go through them again. what advice can i further give him to be sure its right this time he is usualy succesfull with carbs in the past?

I apreciate any and all response.

thank you.

kits are relitivly cheap, buy them and install since yu are going to the trouble to dissasemble them. Old motors burn more furl than new ones that is just the reality. Think about your old truck vs a new one. The gas consumption probably has nothing to do with the idle.

go to brp-johnson, clik literature, then engine parts, then follow the prompts to your engine, clik carb. it has an exploded view of the carb, there are little plugs that have to come out inorder to get to the jets, the rebuild kit has all the gaskets and misc. stuff necessary to keep it from leaking.

So there is no adjustment right?
He said the jets are clean should they be replaced?
They dont come with the kit.

Re: 55hp 79 johnson wont Idle what are the causes

Ilooked at the johnson drwgs and I see the idle orafice.
I found the kit on iboats and the pic shows what looks like one orafice or (jet) I cant tell what it is. I tried to get them at the dealer the other day and he didnt have them. I wish I could get all parts online. I cant find just the jets on Iboats. Also the omc part#s they show on the Iboats dont match the # on johnson.com. will this kit still work?
thank you so much Im sorry to take up so much of your time. Its just that I dont have much money.
