I have a 1970 55hp Chrysler, model 557HA, serial 4216. This past winter I dropped the lower unit and replaced all the seals. The forward edges of the clutch were very slightly worn but not bad. While under way, about once or twice a day it will slip and then go right back in grear very quickly.......
-Is this bad for the clutch?
-Is there anything I can do to stop/fix this?
-Do I just need to adjust the gear shift rod a bit?

Any help would be great, thanks.

You need to adjust the shift rod. With the shift cable removed, shift the linkage into forward. Check to see that the prop locks up. Mark the shift rod where it enters the lower with a felt tip pen. Next, push the linkage to reverse, again, check that the prop locks up. Mark the shift lever where it goes into the lower.

Now you want to put a mark halfway between the two marks, this will be your neutral mark. Now you want to adjust the cable so that, when in neutral, the center mark is showing on the rod. Once this is done, verify that the prop locks up in forward and reverse and you are set.

I think what your saying is that I may have just adjusted the shift rod too much towards the reverse side? Although it does shift into forward and reverse with no problem, this give it the opportunity to jump out of forward on occasion?

Re: 55hp Chrysler

That is correct. You need to get your neutral perfectly centered or you will cause damage to the dog gears.
