Finished the rebuild runs no telltale. Removed the lower leg and rechecked the impeller plate and verified the plate which is under the impeller has the inlet opening on the opposite side of the outlet on the top of the pump. Tube grommet seals appear to be in place with the tube in the correct position checked twice. Could the tell tale be plugged? any advice for evaluating ? I do not own muffs and I have never seen a pair. Ran for a very short moment in a 30 gallon tub with the dwater line above the cavitation plate. Could the exhaust gas blow away enough water to prevent the intake from picking enough water? Stumped and frustrated. Thanks for you help in advance Dom

Dom,
Most likely the water level wasn't high enough. Try filling it up until the water level is about 3 inches below the exhaust relief in the midsection. The exhaust relief is where the water should exit since the '56 15 has no tell tale.
I'll bet that'll fix your problem. If not, did you put the impeller key in the driveshaft?
Good luck,
JBJ

Thanks JBJ
I will fill up the barrel and give it a try. So no water is supposed to come out of the port on the leg? I will send some pictures, Thanks for your help. Dom

the port on the leg is synonymous for "exhaust relief on the midsection". So yes, it should have water coming out. It should look like this '57 18hp or '53 10hp in my photo. It should push plenty of water out on idle. Some folks say "mist", but if mine is just misting out the exhaust I think I've got cooling problems.
If you had the water level about halfway up the leg that shouldn't be the problem but if it was just above the cavitation plate it was too low and probably wouldn't prime the pump. If you run your freshly painted motor in the barrel and it gets a bunch of oily stuff on it don't get discouraged, they all do it. I hate to run my freshy painted ones in a barrel but they don't make muffs for that one anymore I don't think. Here's a pic of my '56 evinrude cruising along right after I first got it. Thought you might like it..:)

Had the same problem with my '56 15HP. Put more water in the barrel, just above the "bulge" that houses the impeller and it pumps and cools great now. Never have a problem with it on the boat. That was the only change was the water level. Rick
